First stop · Picnik

A familiar Austin name with a new chapter

We started the night at Picnik on Burnet Road. Picnik has been around Austin for years, originally building its following as a food truck before opening a permanent location. Our timing happened to line up with another change for the restaurant: its founder was back and the Burnet Road location had just relaunched with a much simpler dinner concept.

Instead of a big menu where everyone builds a completely different meal, the kitchen puts together a daily offering based on what is fresh, available and what the chef wants to cook. They told us they could make adjustments for allergies and dietary needs, but otherwise the idea is to trust the kitchen.

Our dinner included roasted chicken thighs, warm potato salad, cucumber and tomato salad, pickled jalapeños, beets and greens. There was also a local peach caprese salad, and several wines to choose from. We ordered the dinner and a bottle of wine.

Tuesday was definitely the quiet night—we were essentially the only people there—but the service was great, the portions were huge, and the food tasted fresh and thoughtfully put together.

Picnik is quaint and casual rather than fussy. For a weeknight date, that worked. We could sit, talk, share a bottle of wine and let the chef decide what dinner was going to be.

Second stop · Lutie’s

Drinks in the garden

After dinner, we wanted an aperitif, so we headed to Lutie’s at the Commodore Perry Estate. We had been to Lutie’s for dinner before, but this time we were going specifically for drinks—our loophole for keeping the Austin Date Nights “don’t repeat the restaurant” rule intact.

It is one of those places you could easily drive past without realizing what is tucked behind the property. Once inside, the room is small, green and garden-like, with hanging plants, dramatic lighting and a bar that is worth choosing over a table when you can get a seat.

We remembered the famous over-the-top martini with caviar from an earlier visit—the roughly $70 kind of cocktail you remember mostly because you cannot believe someone made a $70 martini. It was no longer on this menu.

Jen had a lemon drop and an espresso martini, and Mark went with an Old Fashioned. Our bartender was extremely helpful and had plenty of stories about the place. That is one reason we like sitting at the bar: you can ask what is good, hear what has changed and usually learn something about the restaurant that never makes it onto the menu.

Our take

Why this pairing works

Picnik is bright, casual and easy. Lutie’s is lush, intimate and polished. Putting them together turned a simple Tuesday dinner into a full date without committing to two big experiences.

Best move: sit at the Lutie’s bar. The interaction with the bartender was part of what made the stop memorable.
