Mexican Sugar was buzzing when we arrived. The restaurant, which opened in March 2026, has a polished, energetic feel with warm lighting, woven pendant fixtures, a busy bar, and a welcoming patio.
We started at the bar, where bartender Travis took care of us. Between the cocktails and the steady stream of people, it was clear this was already a popular place.
Warm salsa, spicy pico & a few surprises
We’re not huge fans of warm salsa, so that wasn’t our favorite. Luckily, they also offered pico de gallo, which was really good—although definitely on the spicy side. They didn’t offer jalapeño ranch, but their avocado cream sauce was delicious, with a slightly smoky flavor.
The tortilla soup was surprisingly thick—more like a goulash than the brothy tortilla soup we expected.
Then came the fajitas, along with a small mix-up. The food runner brought out the wrong fajita dish. The correct one arrived remarkably quickly, and the restaurant let us take the first dish home. An unexpected bonus meal!
A patio made for lingering
The patio has a wonderfully open feel, with fans and heaters for changing Austin weather. Trees wrapped in lights add to the evening atmosphere. It was very busy during our visit, so this is more of a lively date-night destination than a quiet hideaway.
The Austin Date Nights Take
Not every dish was a home run, but we enjoyed the cocktails, spicy pico, slightly smoky avocado cream sauce, attractive patio, and the way the team quickly handled the fajita mix-up. It's a fun choice for a date when you want energy, people-watching, and a drink in a great setting.
