Sake, Sushi & a Little Fruit Ninja at SOSU
An intimate chef’s-counter date where dinner became part meal, part show.
An intimate chef’s-counter date where dinner became part meal, part show.
For this Tuesday date night, we headed to SOSU Izakaya & Sushi Bar on Burnet Road. The best decision we made was sitting at the sushi bar.
At a sushi restaurant, we highly recommend the counter: you get a front-row seat to the craft, a chance to talk with the chefs, and a dinner that feels much more interactive than simply ordering from a table.
The head chef gave us several recommendations throughout the evening, and watching the food come together was part of the fun. The sushi was almost too beautiful to eat—especially the rose-like pieces being shaped right in front of us. Mark even got his own little Fruit Ninja moment watching all the slicing and knife work behind the bar.
To start: Edamame with a little spicy kick and a comforting bowl of shiro miso soup.
To share: Sashimi, sushi, a hand roll and a pork belly rice bowl.
To drink: Sake—the natural pairing for an izakaya date night.
There was no need to rush. We ordered a couple of dishes, shared them, talked, watched the chef work, and then decided what sounded good next. That slower pace made the evening feel especially relaxed.

Our dinner was quiet and intimate, with warm Japanese-inspired décor and enough going on behind the sushi bar to keep the evening interesting without feeling busy. It worked especially well as a date-night spot because the food itself became a conversation starter.

Sitting shoulder-to-shoulder at the sushi bar makes the experience feel a little more connected—and you get to watch your dinner become art. This is a strong choice for a quieter Austin dinner date, sake lovers, and couples who want the meal itself to be the activity.
